Scientifically, the bed of nails can be described by the principles of pressure. Pressure is the application of force over a particular area. In mathematical terms, pressure is equal to force divided by area. With more force, comes more pressure and in relating this specifically to our Shakti® Mats, with more area comes less pressure.
If you step on the point of a nail, your foot exerts a tremendous amount of pressure on the nail's tiny point. As a result, the nail would be pushed through the skin and into your foot. A bed of nails has lots of points that are close together -- which means there's a lot of surface area for the body to cover. When a person steps on or lies on a bed of nails, their body is evenly distributed across the surface of the nails. Hundreds of nails support the weight of your body instead of just one and thus, your body doesn't exert enough pressure on any one nail for it to break the skin.
For some, the sensation is intense. By placing a thin layer of material (a polyester pillowcase works best), you can further distribute the weight of your body across the surface of the Shakti® Mat, which will help significantly reduce the intensity of the sensation.
